From published guidance to a usable handoff.
Before · original source material
Coverage thresholds, periods, table availability and vintage rules live on different Census Bureau pages.
After · finished deliverable
A five-page brief and 50-cell comparison bring five product families onto the same basis, then apply the rules to five concrete research tasks.
The source material is real. Structure, synthesis and decision guidance are Cleargrain’s work. No source defects or business outcomes are invented.
The answer depends on the question
Neighborhood household income calls for ACS 5-year detail. Annual county population growth calls for one Population Estimates Program vintage. The brief explains the source-backed selection rules instead of declaring a universal winner.
A detail a quick comparison could miss
The Census Bureau says separate population-estimate vintages should not be combined. Its current download page also states that current estimates are not supported by the API. Both constraints are preserved in the comparison.
Evidence you can inspect
The workbook compares time period, coverage, purpose, detail, uncertainty, cadence, comparability, access, limitations and sources. The brief links official table definitions and describes five practical research decisions.

Use in context
What this project establishes.
- Independent public-source research, not a client engagement.
- Reviewed 9 October 2026; source availability can change.
- No invented prices, local observations, scores or business outcomes.
- The brief selects data products; it does not claim to have completed a local market study.
- The exported workbook was re-imported and its rendered sheets checked; native Microsoft Excel testing has not been performed.
